Nike’s putting it simply. However much we’d like to “just do it,” there’s a reason an exercise science degree exists. Cindy Thompson, owner of Time Out Sports in Billings, explains what every beginning runner needs to know to get going.
Thompson says of all the equipment a runner has, shoes are the most important.
“It’s the one time in your life that you can’t pick out shoes by looks,” she said.
The pressure walking puts on your joints is two to three times your body weight; five to six times when running. Lingering issues like joint pain and shin splints might point to the wrong shoes.
“There’s enough problems in the world. You don’t need your body to be one of them,” Thompson said.
